FIGHTING CRIME BY THE POLICE ASSISTANCE COMMITTEEAND THE ASSOCIATION OF TRADESMEN/WOMEN AND ARTISANS
The Need and Importance of Accelerating and Organising Seminars and Workshops for Grassroots Members Nationwide Due To The Increment Of Crime In Our Beloved Country Police Assistance Committee is organising Seminars and Workshops in all the states of the Federation to educate the members of the grassroots on how to assist the Police and other security agencies in the area of providing them with useful information. Who are the Grassroots? The grassroots are the members of tradesmen/women and artisans, and each trade association and union has a chairman, secretary and pro. The most fearful aspect of the increment of crime is the kidnapping of human beings. We hear of robbery incidents, house breaking, and ritualists, but kidnappers are increasing day and night because of the huge sums of money they always request and before you know it, the money would be paid to them. Some may ask about the Police and other security agencies but the police and other security agencies are not spirits and magicians; they are human beings like us. It’s only that they have special training on how to apprehend hoodlums and criminals and and how to prosecute them. For that reason, the civilians who are mainly grassroots members have to be encouraged to join hands together in giving the Police useful information because all these kidnappers, highway robbers, and ritualists are living in their midst. That is the reason why every chairman, secretary and pro of every association nationwide need to identify with Police Assistance Committee (PAC) or any other bodies that are in partnership with the Nigeria Police and other security agencies because it is easier for a member of motor parts dealers, or mechanic dealers, or shoe makers or okada riders, etc to give information so easily to the chairman or secretary or pro of his association, the chairman or secretary or pro would then disseminate the information to the nearest Police Station or Area Command or even State Command depending on the nature of the information. People are afraid to give information to the Police, but if they are well enlightened, they would give the information to the chairman of their trade association without fear or shaking. So we need the support of your very good self financially and morally so that we can carry out this accelerating of seminars and workshops in training our grassroots members on how to give information through email and sms to the police and other security agencies. And I believe that any chairman or secretary or pro of any association who refuses to partner with the police and other security agencies through PAC or any other body that is in partnership with the police and other security agencies, may have a skeleton in his cupboard, probably he aids and abets criminals. But it is very difficult to find any leader of any trade association who would be of a questionable character because before the members of the association would appoint him to be their leader they would have made sure he is a man of honourable and credible character and this is also why it is important to partner with them. Each trade association sometimes has membership numbering up to 1000 members, 500 members, 300 members, 200 members and least 100 members in a group under the leadership of the chairman, secretary and pro. Now the installation of computers and internet connections is going on in all the Police State Commands , Area Commands and DPO’s for easy flow of information. So far, many states have been installed and we are still on the project which is meant to encourage the grassroots members so they all shall be their brothers’ keepers in giving useful information to the police and other security agencies through email and sms. Just within last year 2009 and this year 2010, we have installed complete sets of computers with internet connection and accessories in Police Commands and Zonal Offices in such states as FCT Abuja, Lagos state, Imo State, Anambra State, Abia State, Rivers State, Kano State, Kaduna State, etc. This does not include the ones previously installed before the year 2009. We have been doing this so secretly and we have been achieving a lot of success. Many of the Commissioners of Police we installed computers and internet in their offices have commended the efforts of this body. We have concluded arrangements to start installing computers with internet in all the Area Commanders’ and DPO’s offices in many states in Nigeria and in the accelerating of Seminars and Workshops in all the states of the federation, local government areas, and markets in training the grassroots members and stake holders including government officials, civil servants and the general public on how to give useful information through the use of the internet, text messages, land phones, etc. The Police Assistance Committee / Association of Tradesmen/women and Artisans has been donating complete sets of computers with internet connection and accessories like printers to police commands and other security agencies across the Federation and this our widow’s might will enable the police and other security agencies to receive free flow of information from the grassroots members of this body. We also assist the police and other security agencies by donating mobile phones, giant fans, electronic gadgets, and the like.
We also create grassroots awareness with our Tradesmen and Artisans Certificate of Identification to all tradesmen and artisans, intercity/interstate drivers in all states of the federation in the security of life and property and for easy flow of information.
In the past, verbal communication and information was the order of the day, which is still effective, but with the introduction of electronic information security network through the use of the internet and e-mail, information and communication is made easier than ever. This body has been of assistance to many police commands and other security agencies in the area of information dissemination under secrecy through the use of electronic network information systems, e-mail, GSM mobile phones, landlines, websites and the internet. Our body as a matter of fact has been partners in progress with the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies by giving them useful information that would lead to the tracking down of miscreants in the society and we are also partners in progress with Ministries of Commerce and Industry nationwide in generating funds into government coffers by the identification of our members to obtain Certificates of Identification and ID cards from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and we also assist the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in the crusade against obsolete goods by informing them about fake and substandard products in circulation; and we also assist the EFCC, ICPC, CUSTOMS, and the NDLEA in the crusade against crime across the nation.
